Essay

The thesis focuses on the peculiarities of category of impersonality in Modern Greek language. For the first time in Greek and native Hellenic studies category of impersonality is analyzed on the basis of the functional grammar. Category of impersonality in Modern Greek language is alive and is in the process of becoming. This is evidenced by the frequency of use of impersonality expression in language. Functional approach to research of category of impersonality involves identifying key values of impersonal verbs in a minimal context, the detection of other linguistic features that serve to express the category of impersonality (except for impersonal verbs), setting variant / invariant for all semantic elements. One of the central concepts of functional grammar is functional-semantic field. Although category of impersonality is at the periphery of personality (O. Bondarko), we view it as a separate functional-semantic field. The result revealed center and periphery of the category of impersonality in Modern Greek language, which, in turn, are divided into zones according to the principle of hierarchy, established its relationship with other functional-semantic fields of such categories as modality, predication, subjectivity / objectivity, condition. In our work we make a detailed study of the field of impersonality in Modern Greek language, identifying means of expression at the morphological, lexical, syntactic and phraseological levels.
