Essay

Experimental results are presented on the effect of Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of cells on the physiological and biochemical features in transgenic plants genus Cichorium (C. intybus L. and C. endivia L.). Chicory and endive regeneration conditions were optimized (regeneration frequency up 100 %) and and the stipulations for the most effective rooting were determined. Agrobacterium-mediated transformation was used to obtain transgenic chicory plants with human interferon gene and selective nptII and bar genes with a frequency 73.8% and 15% respectively. In the case of endive, transgenic plants with human interferon and Basta herbicide resistance genes were received with frequency 20% by this method. Transgenic C. intybus and C. endivia plants are characterized by more intensive accumulation of biomass, increased polyfructan content, antioxidant and superoxide dismutase activity in comparison with the control plants. Significant increase of these parameters is typical for the stress response of the plant organism. In the case of the protein, photosynthetic pigments content and peroxidase activity of transgenic chicory and endive we did no observe any difference in comparison with control plants.
