The thesis is developed with a focus on the comprehensive analysis of current trends in the development of democratic systems, both at national and supranational levels. The paper presents a classification of the main challenges of globalization faced by modern democratic systems. The transformations of national and supranational democratic institutions in the age of globalization are studied within the conceptual frameworks of the innovative theories of democracy, in particular deliberative approach and agonistic pluralism. Based on this analysis, the model of the European Union as a supranational dynamical democratic political system is developed. In the thesis the current political developments in the European Union as a supranational polity are considered, as well as the influences of extra-societal factors on the European integration model are studied. It is shown, that the economic crises brought about polarization and the crisis of legitimacy at the national and supranational democratic systems. The European Union is presented as a unique polity, in which traditional democratic institutions of national political systems are modified and supplemented, leading to third essential transformation of democracy. The Thesis also covers the issue of the growing skepticism towards bailout policies, developed by the European Union institutions, which gives an impetus for the development of the radical political forces introducing anti-integration rhetoric in public discourse calling for reconsideration of the integration paradigm.
