Essay

The thesis addresses the issues of theurgy and cultural synthesis within the Symbolist cultural paradigm. A special emphasis is made upon Maximilian Voloshin's writings of 1905-1915 ("Suvorin's" and "Amfiteatrov's" lyrical cycles, the book Anno Mundi Ardentis. 1915, translations, articles, diaries, letters). It is argued that Voloshin belonged to the "theurgic" branch of Russian Symbolism as like Vladimir Solov'ev, Andrei Belyi, Aleksandr Blok and Viacheslav Ivanov he was affected by the mysticism of the Eternal Feminine and tried to influence the first Russian revolution and the First World War by means of his art. According to Russian Symbolists and Mаrina Tsvetaeva, poets are the ones who hear a still, small voice and answer the call. Like them, Voloshin became God's fellow worker in the field of Arts and challenged evil with his theurgic poetry. It is also argued that an effective cultural synthesis should be based upon Symbolist theurgy and not upon either Modernist totality or Postmodernist radical plurality. Theurgy that is rooted in cooperation between God and man brings harmony into the world and transforms human beings, societies and the Earth.
