Panochko M. The development of Ukrainian juridical terminology in Western Ukraine (1772-1918).

The dissertation highlights formation and development reguliarities of the Ukrainian juridical terminology on Western Ukrainian lands in 1772 - 1918 in close correlation with generally used national juridical terminology. The dissertation consists of an introduction, four chapters, conclusions and a list of references.Chapter 1 dealing with historical aspect of Ukrainian juridical terminology focuses on great contribution of Western Ukrainian linguists, lexicographers, scientists, writers and lawyers into well grounding scientific foundations of termcreation, collecting juridical terms from people's lips and literary sources on the basis of which linguists tried to create national terminology. Chapter 2 serves as a methodological and theoretical background for investigating juridical terminology of Western Ukraine. Much was done in this respect by I. Franko. His analysed social-political works and the narrative "Crossing Paths" demonstrate rather embranched terminosystem pointing to the development of juridical lexis in Halychyna. For I. Franko as a scientist the main criterian of using legal terms is their convenience and fit for use. Introducing terminology in the language of his works, I. Franko did much for stabilization of the term, for its legitimation in scientific speech and codification in juridical terminology.Chapter 3 examines main sources and factors of forming and enriching legal terminology in Western Ukraine, characterising first of all the most productive morphologic ways of word-building and analytic derivation revealing peculiarities of Western Ukrainian legal word-building. Another productive way of enriching Western Ukrainian terminologic lexicon was borrowings mostly from Latin, German and Polish.
