Inshakov A. The history of colour designation in the Ukrainian language.

The object of this work is a lexico-semantic group of colour names in the Ukrainian language of the XI-XXI centuries. The purpose of the research was to describe the formation and development of the system of the main color names in the Ukrainian language of the XI-XXI centuries. To conduct the research such methods as the component analysis, comparative-historical and comparative were used. In the thesis on a wide actual material for the first time in Ukrainian linguistics the complex analysis of the formation and development of the color names system in Ukrainian from the praslavic period to XXI century was made. Also, the research allowed to reveal the dynamics of this class of words development throughout the considered periods of language history, to measure the degree of productivity of various colour names in different chronological cuts, to describe the thematic subgroups, and to outline the development of the semantic relations in separate microgroups. The system of the main names of colours in modern Ukrainian is non-uniform by origin, it was formed throughout many centuries. One nomens go back to the Indo-European period, others were formed on the basis of the Praslavic language, Old Ukrainian, Middle Ukrainian and New Ukrainian languages or were borrowed at different times from different languages. The group under analysis proves to the high extent the preservation of the all-Slavic lexical layer. The lexico-semantic group of colour names, having begun the formation during the praslavic period, by the end of the XVII century was almost finally created. The registration of the groups of mixed colours (brown, orange, violet) falls onto the XVIII century. The sphere is the application of the given research is in educational process, creation of dictionaries.
