Asmukovich I. Functional and Semantic Properties of the Professional English Language of Aviation

This dissertation focuses on revealing functional and semantic peculiarities of the professional English language of aviation. Sociolinguistic aspects of aviation terminology, the features of its semantic and structural organization are revealed; the main tendencies of its word-building, specific derivative processes and productive structural types of aviation terms are defined. It is claimed that modern English aviation terminology represents a dynamic and open system connected with the development of scientific apparatus of aviation. It is assumed that systemic character of aviation terms shows up in their hierarchical organization. The thesis contains the characteristic of the concept of professional language, analyzes the main functional and communicative characteristics of different genres of the English aviation texts (radiotelephony specific texts, normative and technical ICAO documents, popular scientific aviation discourse). The English aviation specialized texts are studied from the standpoint of term saturation and frequency, and the syntactic and morphological characteristics of the given texts are determined. The principles of the aviation terminological bilingual thesaurus compiling, thematic groups, types of lexical-semantic relations (synonymic, antonymic, hyponymic) between the words are revealed.
