Essay

The object of the research – communication between representatives of English-speaking and non-English-speaking cultures in English. The objective of the work is to determine properties of meaning formation during the process of discursive adaptation in the English communicative space through studying the specifics of realization of adaptation strategies and typical guidelines which are actualized within the process of communication of a polycultural discursive personality depending on discursive surroundings and the stage of adaptation. Methods: interpretational text analysis; discourse analysis; contextual analysis; pragmalinguistic analysis; functional-semantic method; conversational analysis. Theoretical and practical results: Determination of the mechanism of discursive adaptation of the polycultural discursive personality depending on discursive surroundings and the stage of adaptation, which is a contribution to discourse studies. Studying the properties of realization of adaptation strategies and typical guidelines is a contribution to sociolinguistics and linguopragmatics; Characterization of the interaction of verbal and non-verbal communicative components within the framework of communication of representatives of English-speaking and non-English-speaking cultures in English is a contribution to the theory of interaction of different code-systems and the theory of communication. Scientific novelty consists in introducing to scientific discussions the rationale of the theoretical-methodological basis for studying communication of the polycultural discursive personality within the framework of discursive adaptation in the English communicative space; the term “discursive personality” has been specified as well as ethnocentric and ethnorelativist stages of communicative competence acquisition have been determined within the framework of discursive adaptation in the English communicative space; the properties of communication at different stages of adaptation to “another” linguoculture have been established; the properties of meaning formation actualized during communication within the process of discursive adaptation in the English communicative space have been described; the properties of communication depending on discursive surroundings and the stage of adaptation have been established; the specifics of realization of adaptation strategies and tactics in the English communicative space have been determined; the characteristic features of modeling of meanings of verbal and non-verbal communicative components during interaction have been described. The sphere of application: in theoretical courses on lexicology (part “Word, Its Structure and Motivation”), theoretical grammar (part “Pragmatics”), special courses on country studies, intercultural communication, and non-verbal semiotics.
