The thesis is devoted to a complex research of the republican form of government as the basis of the constitutional order of Ukraine. In this work are reviewed peculiarities of historical evolution of the concept of republic. Existing approaches to understanding republic as a form of government and its connection to democracy were analyzed. It is suggested to select two approaches of the interpretation of the term "republic": wide (republic is seen not only as a form of government that is opposed to monarchy, but in close connection to the doctrine of republicanism) and narrow (the term "republic" means the only elective way of filling the position of the head of state, as opposed to the principle of hereditary monarchy). Is reviewed the constitutional principle of republic in foreign countries. Is analyzed the place of republican principle in the system of constitutional order of Ukraine. Is investigated the connection of republican principles to the principles of legal and democratic state and also are suggested the ways of improving of legislation aimed at promoting republican ideas.
