Fakhurdinova M. Fakhurdinova M. A. Grammaticalization of the Tun+Infinitive Construction in Early New High German

The achieved results confirm that the biverbal complex tun+infinitive is an analytical periphrastic construction, i.e. a combination of the grammaticalized auxiliary verb tun and the infinitive of the notional verb. The analytical periphrastic construction tun+infinitive is characterized in Early New High German by a high degree of grammaticalization: the lexical meaning of tun "do" gets completely lost and its grammatical meaning is maximally intensified. The correlation between them is disproportionate, it testifies to the fact that there was a transition from the lexical to the grammatical level. The analytical periphrastic construction tun+infinitive has a high level of integrity in the verb paradigm of Early New High German. The construction is used in all tenses and moods, functioning as a synonymical expression for the imperative, subjunctive and the preterial forms of the conjunctive, but its basic function is to serve as a grammaticalized means of expression of the indicative (a means of analytical conjugation), a bearer of the finite characteristics of the full verb and a means of its emphasis.
