Essay

The thesis presents a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of Turkish-American relations in the post-bipolar period on the examples of the Turkey-U.S. interaction in four different regions of the world - the Black Sea - Caspian region, the Central Asia, the Balkans and the Middle East. The author also proposes her own periodization of the bilateral relations after the end of the "Cold" war and explains the character of the bilateral relations within each period. The "regional map" of the Turkish-American relations is presented whereas the regions with the highest potential for strategic partnership and strategic rivalry are pointed out. Based on the Turkish foreign-policy practices, the strategies of "regional balancing" and "global band-wagoning" are examined as two basic models of behaviour available on the international arena for regional powers. Turkey's emergence as a regional leader is backtraced and its implications for Turkey's relations with the U.S. are analyzed.
