The Dissertation research is devoted to the problem of cognitive activity of students. The essence of the concept of "cognitive activity" and its psychological characteristics are defined. The components of students' cognitive activity: motivational and volitional, procedural and operational and resultant components were found out. The peculiarities of students' cognitive activity in adolescence were investigated. An empirical study to identify the psychological and pedagogical characteristics of students' cognitive activity and to determine the level of formation of each component of the cognitive activity of students was carried out. The psychological model of the development of cognitive activity of students was developed and tested. A program of the development of students' cognitive activity was created. According to the results of theoretical and empirical research practical recommendations of activation of students' cognitive activity were developed.
