Essay

The research provides theoretical grounds and experimental data on the methodology of teaching students majoring in Philology to perform consecutive interpreting (CI) from Ukrainian into English with the application of interpreter’s shorthand (note-taking). The author defines the concept of ‘interpreting’ as the means of cross-cultural communication, suggests a psychological model of CI specifying the stages, subskills and skills involved therein. The author has determined the students’ actual level of note-taking subskills and skills. The thesis focuses on the types, kinds and correlation of exercises for CI teaching. The author developed theoretical grounds, a system and a set of exercises for teaching prospective philologists to efficiently perform CI from Ukrainian into English with the application of interpreter’s shorthand (note-taking), as well as the model of the said teaching, recommendations for the use thereof and a textbook to support it.
