This work is devoted to the studying of individual characteristics of students' understanding of written and spoken text in a foreign language. This work reveals the main characteristics and views on the nature of the problem of understanding of the text in a foreign language, which exist in the native and foreign psychology today. We approach the basic problem of understanding the educational text in a foreign language. We give a general understanding of the characteristics of a foreign language text, review and analyze the main approaches to the classification of these levels. We show an empirical study and the analysis of the relationship between the type of mastering a foreign language and the level of understanding of written and spoken text in a foreign language. It is established that the understanding of spoken and written foreign language text influences to what kind of a foreign language learning student belongs. Author determined the third type of learning a foreign language, a mixed type. It is suggested that this type should be especially productive in the case of teaching a foreign language. The project of program guidelines for lectures and students is shown, which is aimed to improve the process of learning a foreign language and form qualities which are typical for mixed type of learning a foreign language. The recommendations for foreign language teachers are developed, in order to improve the process of learning a foreign language.
