Essay

The dissertation deals with the problems of phraseological units functioning in the Turkish language written speech in the contemporary press discourse and the selection of their adequate equivalents during translation. While considering the role of phraseological units in speech the dissertation finds out that a phraseological unit's expressive characteristics and functional colouring determine its use in a corresponding functional style. For the first time the dissertation makes an attempt at defining the difficulties which arise in the process of selection of an equivalent during the translation of phraseological units taking into account their functions in the Turkish language periodicals discourse. The dissertation also offers a novel classification of phraseological units used in the Turkish language written speech in the contemporary press discourse according to their functional and stylistic characteristics. The dissertation proves the fact that it is not always possible to find a phraseological equivalent for the translation of a phraseological unit. Alongside with the absence of a phraseological unit equivalent in the target language, a phraseological unit in the target language with the same meaning may not correspond to the phraseological unit in the source language stylistically or expressively.
