Essay

The thesis presents a systemic study on the concepts of "light" and "darkness" in Nikolay Gogol's collections "Evenings on a Farm near Dykanka" and "Myrgorod". Ukrainian folklore traditions and mythology are revealed at the different levels of the artist's prose such as thematic, motive, imaginative, plot-compositional, spatial and temporal, generic, and stylistic in order to highlight the dichotomy of "light" and "darkness". The role of the national calendar in the structure of Nikolay Gogol's collections is discussed. The influence of Ukrainian traditional nativity play on the artistic picture of the world is studied. The dynamics of images and symbols included in the semantic field of the concepts as "light" and "darkness" has been investigated.
