Essay

On the one hand, the literary image of the "little man" is viewed as a cognitive textual construct, which incorporates verbalized knowledge about social type of an average man at the end of the XIX century. On the other hand, the "little man" image is seen as a cumulative discursive formation, which realizes author's intentions and strategies, oriented on conceiving of the essence of the "little man" image in American and Irish society. Elaborated on the basis of text world theory, complex methodology claims that the "little man" image is based on the text world, seen both as a cognitive and communicative construct. As well as literary image, the "little man" text world is cumulative according to its structure and integral speaking about its perception. It is assumed that "little man" text world is built by means of deictic, axiological and cognitive planes, realized with the help of communicative and cognitive strategies. It has been proved that cognitive strategies are realized via frames, concepts and conceptual metaphors, predominating in conceptual space of the "little man" image, while communicative strategies are realized via deictic and referential markers, operators of modality, represented in the text. Key words: literary image, text world, deictic plane, axiological plane, cognitive plane, communicative and cognitive strategies, deictic and referential markers, operators of modality, conceptual space.
