Kapranov Y. Principles of Dictionary Entries Construction in Etymological Sources of the English and Ukrainian Languages (based on A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the English Language in 2 vol. and Етимологічного словника української мови in 7 vol.)

This thesis offers a new approach to cognitive and comparative study of principles of etymological dictionaries compiling in the English and Ukrainian languages. Degree of compliance of dictionary entries construction in “A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the English Language” (E. Klein) and “Етимологічний словник української мови” has been revealed with the help of linguo-centric principle of lexicography in general and etymological and linguistic principles in particular. Interrelation between English and Ukrainian orthographic construction rules and principles of two zones of every dictionary entry in the etymological dictionaries has been determined. Regularities and differences in the ways of representing phonetic, morphological, historical and etymological materials have been established. Different approaches to an etymon reconstruction in both languages have been demonstrated. A heuristic model of an etymon (fractal dimension) has been developed based on the principles of cognitive synergy.
