Essay

The thesis presents a historical and philosophical study of representations by XVII century Cambridge Platonists on the soul, mind and consciousness. The content of these concepts in the writings of such members of the Cambridge circle as Benjamin Whichcote, Ralph Cudworth and Henry More is defined. The specific use of these concepts to solve theological and philosophical issues of the time, including criticism of the immortality of the soul and the Cartesian philosophy is detailed. The paper also analyzes the historical and philosophical sources of Cambridge Platonism and studies the specific concepts of the soul, mind and consciousness in ancient and medieval traditions of philosophical thought, and also in modern philosophy.
