The thesis is the first comprehensive study of the diary heritage of one of the Ukrainian literature classics of the twentieth century Oles Gonchar. In this paper the genealogical peculiarity of writer's "Diaries" are defined, there's "intermediate" position between fiction, documentary and journalistic genres - reminiscence, memoir, notes etc. Three-volume edition of his diaries is examined in the context of Ukrainian literary process, in particular the evolution of the diary genre.Gonchar's creative self-reflection was studied in comparison with the diaries of V. Vynnychenko, O. Dovzhenko, A. Lubchenco, J.P.
