According to a study the taxonomic status of Dnieper barbel is upgraded to species level - B. borysthenicus, based on analysis of the complex of morphological features. Barbell with reophilic ecophenotype, which distributed on Ukraines water shields attributed to the B. carpathicus species. B. waleckii is a morphologically heterogeneous intermediate set of individuals that are hybrids between B. barbus and B. carpathicus and are found only in the contact zones of the two species; Instead B. tauricus is a morphologically homogeneous set of populations belonging to the same species.
