Essay

Object: the ethnic and national stereotypes as a sociocultural phenomenon. The goal: to conceptualize the ethnic and national stereotypes as sociocultural phenomenon and to study the process ethnic and national stereotypes formation among the labor immigrants. Methods of the research: the comparative analysis and synthesis, systematic analysis, historical analysis, classification, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. Theoretical and practical outcomes: using the sociocultural approach the concept "ethnic stereotype" is conceptualized as sociocultural phenomenon; the social distance towards the other ethnic and national groups is measured among the labor immigrants; the data about social distance towards different ethnic and national groups was compared applying to labor immigrants and general population of Lviv region and Ukriane; the notions "others" and "ours" are interpreted and the aspects of labor immigrants' ethnic and national stereotypes micro and mezo-levels are specified. Novelty: the development of conceptual basis to study the special aspects of the ethnic and national stereotype formation and how they function on macro-, mezzo and micro-levels. The practical application of study: the results of the the research were used in educational process at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, specifically for the courses "Ethnic studies in Sociology", "Sociology of migration", "Sociology of culture"
