The topicality of the problem of forming basic school pupils' cognitive interest in terms of extracurricular activities in Mathematics is scientifically substantiated; the basic concepts of the research are specified and concretized. Cognitive interest is found to have the following stages of development: it is characterized by emotional and selective focus and is not sustainable at the first stage; it becomes more concentrated, stable entity which encourages pupils to cognition at the second stage; it is determined by resistance, cognitive activity and independence of pupils at the third stage; it is characterized by studying and elaborating complex theoretical problems of science and applying them in practice at the fourth stage.
