Essay

The dissertation presents a comprehensive historical and legal analysis of the functioning of the Soviet penal system in western regions of Ukraine during 1944–1953. The conceptual foundations of the Soviet penitentiary system are formulated and its main goals and objectives at different stages of the Soviet Union existence are defined. The interdependence of prevailing functions of criminal punishment (educational, punitive, preventive) and political and economic realities of different periods are considered.
