Essay

Thesis is devoted to the study of semantics of Ukrainian suffixes denoting a person. Main notions of morpheme semantics are defined, semantic structure of morpheme and structure of morpheme semantics is compared, methods of left-sided contexts classification are suggested. Close attention is paid to a sub-system of suffixes denoting a person. It is researched that there are three types of suffixes as to their place in the sub-system: nuclear suffixes, transitional suffixes and peripheral suffixes. They differ in their semantics and activity. Semantic features, left- and right-side contexts, morph-semantic variants, position and functions in word structures are thoroughly described. Actualization of suffix semantics in different types of functional style texts is compared to potential semantics of morpheme in the language system. The index of actualization of potential semantics of suffixes in speech is suggested to inter-compare suffix semantics in different functional styles. Individual semantic functional-stylistic peculiarities are highlighted for each suffix.
