Essay

The object of the research is works by German-speaking authors of the 19th century dedicated to the Ukrainian hetman: A. May's drama "The King of the Heath", Rudolf von Gottschall's historical tragedy "Mazepa" and Bogdan Lepkyj's pentalogy "Mazepa". The aim of the research is to study the transformation and modification of the mazepian theme in the different cultural and historical environments, to discover the traditional and original authors' features of the artistic reinterpretation of Ivan Mazepa character in the German-language mazepiana of the 19th century and Bogdan Lepkyj's pentalogy "Mazepa". The methods of the research: contrastive and typological, genetic and contact, hermeneutic. The results, the novelty: the preliminaries to the popularization of the Ukrainian hetman in the German-language world are analyzed, the main factors which took part in the formation of different authors' interpretations of Mazepa as a literature character are analyzed, the literary critics of the perception of Bogdan Lepkyj's pentalogy "Mazepa" on the different stages of the Ukrainian literature development are systematized and summarized, the specifics of the artistic interpretation of the Ukrainian hetman's character as a statesman stipulated by the authors' belonging to different cultural and historical epochs is examined, the main thematic complexes which served as the basis for the literary plots about Ivan Mazepa are determined, their functions in the composition structure of the analyzed texts are defined, the characteristic of the key toposes in the context of the artistic and character system of the dramatic works by A. May, R. von Gottschall, and B. Lepkyj's petalogy. The sphere of implementation: lecture courses, special courses in contrastive literature, the history of the Ukrainian and German literature, special courses for bachelor's and master's degree, conducting seminars.
