Essay

The object is Ukrainian adjectives which realize the quantitative attribute meaning in both explicit and implicit ways; the aim is to define and describe derivational and semantic features of quantitative meaning manifestation by Ukrainian adjectives, to trace their representative characteristics in different modern Ukrainian styles; methods that are used: descriptive, component analysis, context analysis, quantitative determination, distributive analysis; novelty - for the first time in Ukrainian linguistics simple (derivative and non-derivative) and compound adjectives with the meaning of quantitative attribute were described according to different language levels, in particular derivational, lexical and semantic ones; the paradigms of quantitative manifestations in gradational adjectives are built and hierarchized with due regard for all formant nuances and their polysemy; it was noticed that prepositional morphemes can explicate either large or small attribute; for the first time valency features of all quantitative affixes were analysed; the influence of context on quantitative adjective desemantisation is revealed in detail and causes of this process are determined; the phenomenon of inconsistency between quantitative items semantics and their lexicographical interpretation is fixed and described; the term 'enantiosemy of quantitative affixes' is introduced into scientific practice; the main functions of adjectives with quantitative meaning in stylistically different contexts are determined; for the first time functional features of quantitative lexemes in scientific, official, journalistic, confessional styles, and oratorical speech were studied; results - the actual material, the main points and conclusions of the thesis can be used when teaching morphology and word-building of modern Ukrainian language in secondary school and higher institutes of learning, while holding seminars and optional courses on affixal, lexical, and contextual semantics, stylistics etc, in scientific researches of students, undergraduates, postgraduates of philological specialities; selected and organized material can be useful for lexicographers while compiling explanatory dictionaries; field - linguistics.
