Essay

In the work the results of semitheoretical research of cross-cultural approach implementation to teaching foreign students the Ukrainian language are set out. The thesis specifies the essence of the concepts "polycultural", "multicultural", "transculture", "interculture", "cross-culture"; defines the terms "cross-cultural approach to teaching foreign students the Ukrainian language", "cross-cultural competency of a foreign student in the process of teaching the Ukrainian language on a preparatory department". According to linguistic, sociocultural, activity, axiological and emotional components of cross-cultural competency, criteria (motivational and axiological, cognitive, operational, behavioural and activity), parameters and levels (elementary, intermediate, upper-intermediate, advanced) of cross-cultural competency formedness are defined. The paper justifies the methodology of teaching foreign students the Ukrainian language on a cross-cultural basis, which conduces successful digestion of educational material, automation of contrasting of cultural and linguistic learning skills, which differ in native tongue and the Ukrainian language; the use of culture-specific units within the concrete context, correct usage of non-verbal means of information transmission, appropriate mode of behaviour in accordance with a social status of a certain person or situation etc. The methodology is focused on contrasting of distinctive aspects in Ukrainian and native languages and cultures to prevent linguistic barriers and cultural chasms that impede meaningful understanding and valid information reproduction in foreign cultural environment.
