Essay

Object: paternalism as a social attitude. Purpose: determination of the characteristics of paternalism as a social attitude in the political culture of modern Ukrainian society. Research methods: interdisciplinary approach, general scientific methods: historical and genetic, systemic and structural, analysis and synthesis; cross-tabulation, correlation, cluster analysis, methods of comparison, qualitative data analysis. Theoretical and practical results: interdisciplinary approaches to the interpretation of paternalism were classified in historical perspective, so traditional, liberal and synthetic conceptual approaches were defined as a result; paternalism as a complex multidimensional phenomenon of political consciousness and culture, which functions on the societal, institutional and personal levels of social interaction, was conceptualized; the conceptual scheme for analysis of the paternalistic attitudes, that has a two-dimensional structure, was developed; statistically significant values differences between social categories of those, who shared attitudes to paternalism, and those who do not share were identified and justified, using S. Schwartz' methods for values measurement. Novelty: sociological conceptualization of the phenomenon of paternalism as a social attitude in the political culture of modern Ukrainian society and the operationalization of the relevant concept. Extent of implementation: the results of the research could be implemented to the educational process in teaching such disciplines as "Political sociology", "Political science", "Sociology of post-communist transformation", "Social structure of society", "Political culture and political behavior".
