Essay

The object is a specific lexical-semantic group of odor words in the history of the Ukrainian language. The goal - to make a description of formation and development of odors names in the Ukrainian language of XI-XXI centuries. The methods are as follows: descriptive, lingvostatistical, component analysis, comparative and historical, comparable. The thesis presents wide factual material and carries out a comprehensive analysis of the odor word stock formation and development in the Ukrainian language from Proto-Slavic period to the XXI century. This research first reveals the dynamic process of this word class within the language developing periods. Also the paper determines the degree of efficiency among odor word stock units in various chronological ages; it outlines thematic subgroups and identifies semantic relations in separate small groups. Odor word stock in modern Ukrainian language is a continuation of long-lasting processes. The Ukrainian language inherits the main part of odor word stock from Proto-Slavic, ancient Russian and Ukrainian language periods. The efficiency of the major thematic groups expands; these groups are formed among the formative lexical families and form so called subtypes. On the Ukrainian background a number of new thematic subgroups appear and mold a coherent system which becomes an important component of general Ukrainian language lexical system. The sphere is the educational process.
