The history and the current condition of the nickname study in the native linguistics are depicted, the linguistic status of a nickname is clarified, the category of the nickname is isolated from the pseudonyms and other antroponymy categories; methods of the research, ways of assignment and general aspects of nickname functioning are outlined. The principles and reasoning of nickname nomination of the inhabitants of Vinnychchyna are determined.
