Essay

The thesis provides synchronic and diachronic, lexical-semantic, linguistic and historical analyses of chant names in the Ukrainian language. The dynamics of their formation and development is studied. Chant names' sources, ways of their formation and functioning are determined. The specificity of lexical and semantic processes that accompanied the formation of the Ukrainian lexemes under study is considered. The synchronic and diachronic analysis of terminological group of chant names allows making some generalizations about the conditions of their emergence and development in the Ukrainian language, which, in our opinion, can be extrapolated to the entire system of sacred vocabulary.Ukrainian religious chants emerged after the adoption of Christianity in Rus. The names of chants were borrowed from the Greek language or translated (loaned) from this language. As early as the tenth century, houses of worship had their church choirs and schools that laid the foundations of religious singing (chant). Some scholars argue, however, that chants, as well as other religious names, emerged much earlier, before the ninth century. This opinion is motivated by the fact that words for naming religious concepts of paganism were common in pre-Christian times already. With the introduction of Christianity, part of pre-Christian names in the Old-Ukrainian language disappeared and some were reconsidered or acquired new semantic augments to meet the needs of the new religion. Despite long (millennial) evolution, the cant names under study underwent very little modification and preserved their archaic forms until early twentieth century.
