Essay

The thesis presents the analysis of the scientific literature related to the issue of the study of ancient forms in I. Franko's translated and original literary works highlighting the author's reasoning on the form of a poetic text. Diachronic aspect of versification of the poet's translations and original works that appropriated antique forms is studied. It is demonstrated that the poet tested syllabotonic matchings of four ancient forms (hexameter, elegiac distich, iambic trimeter, trochaic tetrameter) and imitations of three stanzas (Sapphic, Alcaic, Asclepiadean ІІІ). Of the 441 translated works, 73,7% have content- or genre-oriented forms, 3,6% constitute the works with the forms by the intermediary sources, and the works with the syllabotonic matches to the forms of the ancient originals comprise 22,7%.
