Essay

Modern tendencies in language studies suggest that a literary text analysis should be carried out with the help of cognitive linguistics. Singling out artistic concepts contributes to systematization of factual material and its in-depth study. Works of Theocritus ? a prominent poet of the hellenistic period in ancient Greece have not been in focus of cognitive linguistics yet. This fact dictates the necessity of comprehensive study of the peculiarities of writer's individual manner. Lexical analysis of idiostyle and topics of Theocritus' idylls on the conceptual level gives grounds for highlighting two macro-concepts NATURE and MAN (human of any gender is meant) which fully reflect the poet's inner world. The paper reviews several main notions: conceptual space, conceptual fields and groups. Being individual, the author's system of artistic concepts completes the conceptual sphere of Greek nation. The componential analysis employed in this research is the most appropriate means of studying the structure of the artistic concept which recently has become a topic for discussions. After examining a number of scientific papers, we consider that the structure of the artistic concept in Theocritus' idylls should distinguish the following components: objective which consists of sensory modality, figurative as a set of metaphorical models (conceptual metaphors), associative containing author's associations, symbolic arising from sustainable archetypal and mytho-logical associations, and value-evaluative component which is seen in author's positive or negative assessment of a certain element of reality.
