The purpose of the work is to improve the results of updating topographic maps from satellite images. In thesis following tasks are solved: investigation of the Republic of Iraq cartographic study, definition of the limitations and drawbacks, and the reasons why they have caused; reviewing and recommendation of space imaging system for updating topographic maps in Iraq; developing a new method of topographic maps updating from satellite images to improve the quality of updating; developing a software tools for the implementation of the proposed method; experimental evaluation of map updating via developed software; exploring alternative method for automatic selection of roads on the bitmap. Analysis of characteristics of space camera systems and the scope of satellite images with different resolution shows that for updating topographic maps should be used satellite images from the satellites GeoEye-1, QuickBird, Ikonos, WorldView-2 - for maps 1: 5000; Eros A, Eros B - for maps 1: 10,000; Spot-5 - for maps 1: 25000; IRS 1C / 1D - for maps 1: 50000; Spot-4 - for maps 1: 100000. Alternative technological scheme for automated road network selection in Iraq raster data is proposed and considered. This technological scheme uses Erdas Imagine software. The technology is based on uncontrolled classification algorithm ISODATA. By this method a total length of roads on the satellite images in 2003 and 2013 is calculated. This length is respectively 1,396 and 2,544 km.
