In this study, using polymerase chain reaction with subsequent analysis of re-striction fragment length, the allele frequency and genotype distribution of polymor-phic 1G/2G-1607 variants of MMP-1 gene and polymorphic C-1562T variants of MMP-9 gene in patients with uterine leiomyoma (UL) and women of the control group were defined. The first of the above mentioned polymorphisms was established to be associated with UL. In 2G-homozygotes risk of this benign tumor was 3.2-fold higher than in 1G-homozygous women. General risk factors such as presence of cancer in close relatives as well as reproductive and gynecological status of women affected the relationship between the polymorphic variants of the MMP-1 gene and benign tumor growth.
