Essay

The present thesis work, titled "Influence of Parenting Style on Personal Potential Development Of Teenagers", is dedicated to the problem of personal potential. In this dissertation personal potential is regarded as a potential of self-regulation and is defined as an integrated system characteristic of individual psychological personality constitution. This characteristic determines individual's ability to act through the lens of his own stable internal criteria and maintain variability in responding to external influences. It is one's ability to express himself as an individual and act autonomously and independently, what consequently has a specific impact on the surrounding environment, while showing flexibility and resistance to internal and external changes. We highlight the following components of personality potential: personality maturity, resilience, tolerance of uncertainty, self-determination, locus of control, high level of Ego development. Based on this structure, investigation results show that teenagers have 6 profiles of the potential: autonomous, internalized, impulsive, maladaptive, determined, detached. Maladaptive type significantly differs from other profiles, showing the lowest level of Ego development. This profile has following characteristics: external locus of control, lack of internal motivation and own or adopted life-purpose orientations, low life satisfaction. Autonomous profile shows the highest level of personality development and overall internality, as well as internality in regards to achievements and failures. This type also shows the highest levels of life-purpose orientations and life satisfaction in comparison to other clusters. This one is the most beneficial profile of personality development. Internalized profile is very similar to autonomous type. The only difference is low level of autonomous locus of causality within this type. Impulsive profile shows strong performance of indicators of impulsive stage of personality development, low level of life-purpose orientations, and the lowest level of life satisfaction. If compared to other types, this one has high values of autonomous causal orientation, and low level of some other indicators, such as internality in regards to achievements and failures. Determined profile shows high values of external and impersonal locus of causality, compared to other indicators, which are relatively low. Detached profile shows average levels of all parameters applied, except for autonomy. If this profile prevails, individual has average level of Ego development, inner locus of control. This type also shows above average life-purpose orientations and overall resilience. The next step was to identify characteristics of parenting which have impact on personality potential of teenagers. According to the results of the present study maladaptive profile of personality potential is caused by lack of parental prohibitions and absence of parental fear of loss.
