The thesis investigates the problem of skill-formation for independent work with the textbook in the process of studying physical geography pupils of the 6th - 8th forms. School geography education is an integral part of the general education system and the process of teaching geography provides a substantial increase in the share of pupil's independent work. Implementation in the school methodology that involves the use of various forms and methods of independent studying in geography is capable to optimize the educational process, increase motivation to the subject and the level of pupils' achievements and contribute to effective formation of cognitive independence of pupils. Despite the achievements made in theory, methodology and pedagogical practice, the problem of pupils' independent work organization does not lose relevance and requires further study. In the thesis the features of pupils' skills formation for independent work with the textbook in the process of studying physical geography is determined on the base of the analysis and generalization of philosophical, psychological, pedagogical and methodological literature. Formation of independent work skills with the textbook we consider as a sequential process of knowledge and skills development, in which students on the teachers instructions and under his leadership independently carry out educational and cognitive activities based on the usage of textbook components. Physical geography textbook is an intellectual tutorial, multifunctional model of the learning process. It fills training with specific material, provides guidelines of course construction to the teacher and the material for the students independent work. The methodology of pupils' skills formation for independent work with the textbook in the process of studying physical geography and its model are analyzed. The morphological structure of the model provides interaction between theoretical, organizational and productive components. The system of relationships between the model elements is defined. The structural components, pedagogical conditions, methodology, stages, criteria and levels of investigational skills are examined. The experience concerning the conditions of pupils' skills formation for independent work with the textbook is explored and summarized. Offered model allows to consider the main aspects of independent work skills formation with textbook. The effectiveness of worked out methodological system of secondary pupils' skills formation for independent work with the textbook in the process of studying physical geography is improved in experimental way. The practical significance of the research is concerned with the development of methodological system of secondary pupils' skills formation for independent work with the textbook in the process of studying physical geography for teachers.
