Essay

The paper presents the typology of women's images in Oleksandr Dovzhenko's literary heritage. It is noted that the artist used the biblical characters, Yaroslavna ("The Song of Ihor's Campaign" ("Slovo o Polku Ihorevim")), his own mother, his second wife, Julia Solntseva, and other outstanding women he met in his life as a prototypes for his literary heroines. The theme of the so-called women's apostasy during the Second World War is reflected in Dovzhenko's works in the image of Chrystya Khutorna ("Ukraine in the fire" ("Ukrayina v ohni"), whose moral decadency was caused, according to the writer, first of all by dysfunctional Soviet system of school education. However, the artist creates images of adamantine women-patriots who even under occupation actively opposed the invaders. This, for example, Ulyana Ryasna ("Chronicle of Flaming Years" ("Povist' polumyanyh lit"). The Oleksandr Dovzhenko's literary heritage analysis gives bases to the conclusion that, according to writer, the ideal of Ukrainian woman is the woman, who harmonically combines outer and inner beauty, who is always faithful to her husband, who is the guardian of her family and who is the indomitable patriot of her homeland. Such indicators are the most relevant to Olesya Zaporozhets from kinopovest "Ukraine in the fire" ("Ukrayina v ohni").
