Essay

The dissertation is considered to be the first attempt in modern Ukrainian jurisprudence to study the establishment and functioning of prisons in the Volyn region of the Russian Empire from the XVIII century until the beginning of the XX century, which deepens the understanding of all aspects of the establishment and functioning of the Russian Empire penal system. Our aims were: to describe its particular historiography; to investigate the imprisonment institute as a form of criminal punishment in the pre-reform and post-reform periods; to characterize the legislative regulatory of prisons functioning in the Volyn region; as well as the authorities of the prison administration in the Volyn region; and the system of prisons in the Volyn region. Theoretical conclusions and proposals are made in the end of the dissertation.
