Essay

The object of the research is the processes of democratization of the modern political system of Ukraine; The goal is to reveal the general tendencies and specificity of the activities of the city council as an institution of local democracy; Methods: systemic, institutional, structural-functional, problem-chronological, behavioral. The scientific novelty lies in the complex analysis of the specifics of the city council as an institution of local democracy in Ukraine, which is concretized in the provisions: an author's interpretation of the category "potential of the institutions of local democracy" is suggested, the expediency of synthesizing the theory of participatory democracy, the synergetic approach and empiricism in the form of publicity index of city councils, The conditions determining the development of the institutions of local democracy in Ukraine are defined. The main results can be used in the teaching of disciplines to students of the specialties "Political Science" and "Public Administration", while preparing manuals on the theory of local self-government, are of practical importance for workers of local authorities, institutions of local democracy and other policy actors for constructive interaction. The formulated conclusions and recommendations are implemented in the activities of the Lutsk City Council and at the Faculty of History of the Lesya Ukrainka Eastern European National University
