Kushnyeryova M. Hohol’s text in the Ukrainian literature of the second half of the twentieth century

The thesis is the first attempt of systematic studying the intertextual connections between the Ukrainian literature of the second half of the ХХ century and the literary works by M. Hohol. The complex analysis of author’s motifs, characters and plots as well as Hohol’s myth in the Ukrainian literature of the second half of the ХХ century is done. The author of the work continues the Ukrainian scientists’ researches concerning the problem “tradition – innovation” based on Hohol’s text as well as on the artistic reception of the life and literary works of the great writer. The thesis focuses on the analysis of the reception of plots, motifs and characters of the literary works of M. Hohol in the Ukrainian literature of the XIX-XX centuries, stages of reconceptualization of their content and form depending on the development of the Ukrainian poetry, prose and dramatic works. The expediency of analyzing “Hohol’s text” concept as personal text is proved in the work. The prosaic, poetic and dramatic works which contain explicit or implicit references to M. Hohol, as well to motifs, characters and plots of his works are analyzed in the thesis. Intertextual studying of Hohol’s text phenomenon in the Ukrainian literature of the outlined period revealed the creative feature of semantic similarity of the literary works of Ukrainian authors and M. Hohol’s writings. The peculiarities of Hohol’s tradition imitation by the writers, the ideological and artistic transformation effectiveness and the main Hohol’s mythologems code conversion by the authors are also revealed. The basic strategies of M. Hohol’s image artistic modelling, particularly, by the authors of the Soviet period are analyzed. The concept “Hohol’s text” is further defined in the work. We understand it not only as the unique phenomenon of creativity and personality of the writer but also their forthcoming reception which has become an integral part of the literary process of the second half of the ХХ century. It is defined in the work that Hohol’s text including into the context of the Ukrainian writers works became their artistic peculiarity. Different issues such as writer’s destiny and mission, Holodomor, national identity, life orientation, life and death correlation are raised in these Ukrainian writers works. It is proved in the thesis that image-mythologem of M. Hohol took the signs of semantic space accumulating a set of accepted meanings, cultural associations and precedential phenomena keeping potential openness for literary activity of the authors. It allowed to mark out the creation of Hohol’s myth (myth about M. Hohol) as one of the strategies of Hohol’s text interpretation. It is found out that the theme of Ukraine in the literary works by M. Hohol, timeless character of the presented philosophical dilemmas, the writer’s attempt to reconcile in himself the national Ukrainian Cossacks psychotype with the attempts to subdue his career pro-imperial solutions define the main reason of Hohol’s theme actualization in the Ukrainian literature, allow to understand the phenomenon of Hohol’s text in the Ukrainian literature and form the Ukrainian interpretative model of assimilation of M. Hohol’s plots, motifs and images.
