Object - the process of teaching future navigators reading sailing instructions in English in the dynamics of its step-by-step implementation. Purpose - the theoretical substantiation and experimental testing of the methodology of teaching future navigators reading sailing instructions in English. Methods - theoretical, empirical, statistical. Theoretical results and novelty - for the first time the methodology of teaching future navigators reading sailing instructions in English that would provide their full understanding for the safe ship navigation has been scientifically substantiated and experimentally tested. The methods of teaching future navigators reading sailing instructions in English have been analysed and the inadequacy of their theoretical substantiation and the impossibility of providing a complete and instant understanding of their content for the safe conduct of professional actions have been revealed. The essence of the concept "sailing directions" as an integrated linguistic material and the psychological peculiarities of reading them have been defined. The eight-stage linguo-didactic model of teaching future navigators reading sailing instructions in English has been elaborated and a corresponding system of exercises of its implementation has been modelled. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology has been verified and confirmed in the course of experimental teaching by means of linguistic, preverbal, verbal and production criteria. High, average, sufficient and low levels of formation of future navigators sailing directions reading skills taking into account the urgent and safe ship navigation have been characterized. The system of organizing lexical material selected from authentic sailing directions for its relatively complete assimilation has been specified. The theory and practice of teaching future navigators reading professionally orientated texts and the possibility of performing professional actions on their basis has acquired futher development. Practical results - the development of a methodology of teaching future navigators reading sailing instructions in English, the guidance for its implementation in educational practice, and the training manual "Learn to Read Sailing Directions for Navigators" for third-year students of marine educational institutions. The degree of implementation is high. The field (area of application) - pedagogical, higher educational institutions.
