The thesis focuses on researching the methodological prerequisites for the formation of prospective philologists’ competence in dialogical speech on the basis of problematic situations emphasizing the methods of teaching students English dialogical speech by conducting an opinion exchange discussion in English. The content, the structure of competence in dialogical speech and methodological principles of the problem-based learning realization have been determined. The characteristics of discussion as a kind of dialogical communication, lingo-methodical and psycholinguistic peculiarities of discussion and its structure have been described. Psycholinguistic, linguistic, methodological and psychological difficulties in teaching dialogical speech have been developed. The nomenclature of problematic situations and tasks for teaching first-year students discussion, formed the basis for educational materials’ selection (informative and edifying articles and television programs in English), have been developed Both the subsystem of exercises for teaching prospective philologists discussion in English based on problematic situations and the model of learning organization based on the subsystem have been put into practice. The experimental teaching has proved the validity of the suggested methodology; its optimal edition has been substantiated. Methodological recommendations to teachers for organizing prospective philologists’ discussion in English in the process of teaching on the basis of problematic situations have been developed.
