Essay

The paper focuses on lingual cognitive and pragmatic aspects of empathy in the English juvenile fantasy prose. It reveals the nature of empathy from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, linguistic emotiology, and pragmatics. Empathy in the English juvenile fantasy prose is viewed as an event concept. The methodology of research is complex and includes the methods of cognitive linguistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis. The major scientific methods are conceptual analysis, componential analysis, modus modelling. The scientific novelty of the research is determined by the systemic analysis of the cognitive and affective empathy types; the paper seeks to identify conceptual structure of the event concept EMPATHY; to determine the concepts belonging to the conceptual domain EMPATHY; to identify the illocutionary potential of the empathic utterances; to differentiate between empathic and conventional expressive speech acts. The theoretical significance of the paper is determined by its contribution to the development of cognitive discursive approach to linguistic research, cognitive linguistics and axiology, the theory of conceptual metaphor and pragmatics. The practical value of the obtained results lies in the possibility to apply them in teaching lexicology of the English language (theme "Lexical Semantics"), general linguistics (themes "Language and thought", "Language and society"), courses in cognitive linguistics and communication theory, sociolinguistics, linguistic axiology, conceptual metaphor.
