Essay

The thesis is a study of expressive means typical of the poetic language of a Roman poet Gaius Valerius Catullus (87-54 BC). The dissertation offers a systematization of theoretical principles applied to the study of poetic language viewed as a means of reflecting the author's individual style and his world outlook. It also analyses the use of expressive means functioning at phonetic, grammatical, and lexical language levels as well as defines their stylistic value. In the paper the author characterizes the personality of Gaius Valerius Catullus and reveals the factors that influenced the growth of the poetry popularity both among contemporaries and in the centuries to come. The dissertation advances the idea that the specificity of Gaius Valerius Catullus' poetry is influenced by a number of socio-historical, aesthetic-and- philosophical as well as lingual-and-cultural factors, among which there were the following: the process of the Roman Republic collapse and, as a result, the fall of patriarchal traditions and the emergence of new people; prevalence of Greek traditions in literature and the aspiration to create the same traditions on the Roman basis; the desire to present new genres and topics into the literature, using the potential of the Latin language.
