The thesis is devoted to the study of the axiological and poetic and stylistic parameters of the prose by P. Kapelgorodskyi, the determination of the peculiarities of their artistic realization and functioning in the context of Ukrainian literature development during the period of the 1900–1930s of the XX century.In the first chapter, the views on the nature of creativity and peculiarities of P. Kapelgorodskyi’s artistic thinking are determined and systematized in Ukrainian literary studies; the dynamics of creative searches of the artist, peculiarities of his artistic evolution from the point of view of traditions and in the general context of the literary process of the first decades of the twentieth century was considered; their conditionality was proved by socio-cultural and literary and aesthetic conditions of the transitional period. In the second chapter of the thesis the range of problem-thematic priorities and poetic and stylistic dominants in the stories of P. Kapelgorodskyi was determined, the writer’s movement from the literary tradition to modernist aesthetics and poetics was traced. It was found out that the problem-thematic and ideological, and aesthetic vectors of the small-format prose by P. Kapelgorodskyi are actualized by the real socio-cultural and socio-political contexts, which are characterized by expressive anthropological and national-patriotic pathos. The discourse of the novel genre is marked by the social and individual projections, enriched by a profound analysis of philosophical problems: the sense of being, the existence of personality, the fatalities of life conflicts and situations, etc. It is established that the poetics of flash fiction and the novels of P. Kapelgorodskyi represent a kind of synthesis of realistic tendencies and elements of various figurative structures – naturalism, symbolism and impressionism. In the third chapter of the thesis, the problematic multi-vector of the novel “Shurgan” is comprehended, the specificity of the figurative and semantic organization of the novel “Artesian” is determined, and the peculiarities of the author’s modeling of the Ukrainian liberation movement in “The Defense of Poltava” are clarified. It was revealed that the constant sign of creative writing of the writer in the great epic works was the inclination to combine ideological and aesthetic norms. Artistic pictures of social and political transformations, depicted by the author in the novel, show symbols and signs that create an alternative to the requirements of a socialist realistic canon, an interpretation plan, that is deeply encrypted, which manifests itself in different coordinates of the text.
