Pivnova L. Tourism vocabulary in the Ukrainian language: development and functioning.

The status of language for specific purposes (LSP) in modern linguistics has been analysed in the thesis. The research is focused on the issues of studying terminology at the beginning of the 21st century. The most characteristic features of LSP in the field of tourism have been identified; the field structure of the terminology system has been examined and its largest stratums (terms, professionalisms, nomenclature names) have been distinguished. In this paper the author has elucidated the history of basic tourism vocabulary development; the main stages of its development have been determined. The ways the definitions of the main terms of tourism are given in the dictionaries and educational and methodical works by Ukrainian and foreign linguists have been considered, peculiarities of their interpretation in different periods of the industry development have been investigated. Development of nuclear terms as the basis of the tourism terminology in the Ukrainian language has been focused on in this thesis. Such proto-terms as tourism, tour, guest, hospitality, hotel, traveller, passport, etc. have been analysed.
