Object: the literary works of the 20 - 40s of the XIX century - "Melmoth the Wanderer" (1820) by Ch. R. Maturin, "The Talisman" (1825), "The Highland Widow" (1827) by W. Scott, "The Twin, or My Evenings in Little Russia" (1828) by A. Pogorelsky, "The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club" (1837) by Ch. Dickens, "Queen of Spades" (1834) by O. Pushkin, "Notes of a Madman" (1834) by M. Gogol, "Jane Eyre" (1847) by Ch. Bronte, "The Twin" (1846) by F. Dostoevsky. The methods of the research work: an integrated approach that contains the elements of biographical, cultural-historical, comparative-historical, typological, thematic and interpretive methods, that is supplemented by modern achievements of the theory of psychoanalysis. The results and the scientific novelty of the dissertation are these: the discourse of insanity in the context of foreign psychiatry and psychology was explored for the first time on the material of English and Russian prose of the 20 -40s of the XIX century; methods and forms of artistic and aesthetic synthesis of the clinic and poetics of madness have been discovered, classification of mental illnesses of romantic and realistic discourses, techniques and methods of their bell?ration are presented; the traditional interpretations of the motive of madness in the works by Ch. R. Maturin, W. Scott, Ch. Dickens, Ch. Bronte, A. Pogorelsky, O. Pushkin, M. Gogol, F. Dostoevsky in the light of the interdisciplinary approach have been adjusted. The sphere of use: teaching in the higher educational establishments the courses on comparative literary studies and history of foreign literature of the XIX century, creation of the textbooks and the manuals on the theory of literature, in special courses on the history of Russian and English literature, as well as during the writing of student diploma and master's theses.
