This thesis focuses on the study of the communicative situation of misunderstanding in Modern English dialogical discourse. The paper reveals the sociocognitive nature of the situation of misunderstanding with the corresponding causes of its occurrence in the microsocial (at the level of the speaker) and macrosocial (at the level of social groups) contexts. It has been established that within the communicative situation of misunderstanding speakers use two key strategies: preventing misunderstanding and overcoming it. Overcoming misunderstanding correlates with the mechanism of repair, where self-repair dominates other repair. The strategic type of misunderstanding is identified in the thesis: it is a simulation of communicative misunderstanding on the part of the addressee to achieve his / her egocentric goals.
